This State Park located on the John Day River has been on our bucket list for some time. This former working ranch is the second largest & newest park in the Oregon Park system. (note: newest park that offers camping).
To conclude Labor Day weekend, we headed over to Dry River Canyon (about 16 miles east of Bend) for an afternoon hike. It’s located just outside the boundary of Oregon Badlands Wilderness. The canyon is closed to visitors from Feb 1st to Aug 31st to protect nesting birds of prey. It was an enjoyable...
We took a drive up to Three Creeks Lake, Just north of Sisters, to check out the campgrounds today. We happened upon the Tam McArthur Rim trail and decided to take a hike. It was a great trail with lots of eye candy.
Steelhead Falls, which is included in the Deschutes Canyon-Steelhead Falls Wilderness Study Area, was on today's books.
The Old McKenzie Highway opened on Monday after the Milli/ Separation fires & winter closure. This sounded like a good excuse for a little auto touring. It was interesting to see the fire areas as they backed up to the lava flows. We decided to drive the whole loop around Mt Washington and, in the...
We enjoy hiking, and Bend offers plenty of options. We will add our hikes to this section and will first start with the South Sister hike.

Friday's hike (Sept. 16th) was a tad more challenging, to say the least, if not just downright difficult. But we did cover the twelve-mile...
Rio Grande del Norte National Monument is a short drive from our Forest Service campground, so it only made sense to check it out. We had a fun day exploring and hiking.
We're so happy to be back in the tall pine/fur trees and mountains camping at 7,900' elevation about seven and a half miles west of Red River, NM.
Today’s drive ended at Black Mesa SP, a quiet park in the western part of the Oklahoma panhandle. Why? Because we were very near the highest point in Oklahoma.
"It's always fun to have a winery as your destination. Bar Z Winery was no exception. We had a nice spot for our RV. Later we sampled great wines & had a fun visit with the owner."
We've wanted to check out this SP. Lots of good hiking. And nearby is the site of the Battle of Picacho Pass, one of several Civil War engagements in the Arizona Territory.
One of the activities we are enjoying in SoCal is hiking. There is an amazing number of hikes available within driving distance from Jojoba Hills, and there’s BLM land just outside our park's gate that offers random single-track dirt roads and trails to explore. Here’s a brief recap of the Februa...

Porcupine leading the way on New River Trail.
This trail is an easy 3.2-mile loop trail that runs through several habitat types. Two short sections of the trail go along the road. Actually, the loop is a collection of 6 short trails: Ocean View Trail, Huckleberry Hill Trail, Ridge Trail, North ...
We decided to do some exploring on Seven Devils Road and, as we were driving, saw the sign for South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. So we pulled in to see what this was about. After visiting the Interpretive Center, we decided to check out a few of the trails to see what South Slough ha...
Found a nicely wooded campground that offers spectacular views of Bastendorff Beach below. This beach extends from Yoakum Head to the south jetty, which is the entrance of the bay.

"We've moved on and now find ourselves at Dolly Copp campground in the White Mountain National Forest. A huge Forest Service campground with 177 sites - right now, I bet that only a dozen are occupied."
