Hosmer Lake, Oregon

KAYAKING AT HOSMER LAKE

We had an enjoyable afternoon kayaking with our friends Tom & Alison, RV’ers that we met in Bend a year ago.

This is a popular lake to kayak, canoe, & paddleboard as no motorized boats are allowed. The lake has south & north sections connected by a narrow channel and offers Broken Top & Mount Bachelor scenic views. Because the lake is shallow and very clear, it’s fairly easy to catch glimpses of brook trout and Atlantic salmon. Fly fishing with barbless hooks only is allowed, and the Atlantic salmon must be released.

In the heart of the Cascade Range in central Oregon is the beautiful Hosmer Lake, a natural body of water almost 5,000 feet above sea level. This stunning lake is surrounded by the impressive peaks of South Sister (10,358 feet), Broken Top (9,175 feet), and Mount Bachelor (9,065 feet), creating an awe-inspiring natural landscape.

A Transformation Story
Hosmer Lake used to be known for its unclear waters and undesirable fish species. However, in recent years, there has been a remarkable change. Thanks to conservation efforts, the lake now has pristine waters and a thriving population of brook trout, rainbow trout, and cutthroat trout, making it a top choice for fishing enthusiasts.

A Playground for Water Activities
With an average depth of only 3 feet, Hosmer Lake is perfect for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and canoeing. Its shallow waters allow visitors to easily explore hidden corners and small passages where they might encounter various wildlife such as ospreys, bald eagles, and different types of water birds that have made Hosmer their home.

The Hidden Gem
Located just a short drive away from Bend, Oregon's popular outdoor hub, Hosmer Lake remains relatively unknown to many. Its breathtaking natural beauty, fantastic fishing opportunities, and wide range of recreational activities make it a destination worth discovering for anyone who wants to experience the wonders of the Cascade Range.

Exploring Mount Bachelor
Close by stands the iconic Mount Bachelor which offers a plethora of outdoor activities for visitors throughout the year. During winter months it transforms into a skiing paradise with over 4,300 acres of skiable terrain and a summit elevation of 9,065 feet. In summer months hikers and mountain bikers can enjoy numerous trails that provide mesmerizing views of the surrounding landscape.

Whether you're looking for a serene day on the water, an adventurous hike, or an exhilarating ski trip, both Hosmer Lake and Mount Bachelor offer an ideal combination of natural beauty and outdoor recreation in central Oregon's Cascade Range.
