Deschutes Brewery, Bend, Oregon

Deschutes Brewery Tour.

This is our fourth summer to visit Bend, but our first to take the tour of Deschutes Brewery. In the past, we’ve made a point of visiting their Public House in downtown Bend, which began brewing in 1988. Construction on the main brewing facility began in 1993.

If you are in Bend, we recommend that you take their informative and enjoyable brewery tour and enjoy the sample brews afterward (or before the tour). Deschutes Brewery started in 1988 when Gary Fish, a homebrewer and entrepreneur, founded the company. It has grown into one of the most successful craft breweries in the Pacific Northwest region.

The idea for Deschutes Brewery came to Fish in 1986 during his trip to Europe. He was impressed by the traditional brewing methods he saw there and wanted to bring that same craftsmanship to his own brewery. He also recognized the unique qualities of Pacific Northwest hops and water, which he believed would create exceptional beers.

Fish's vision became a reality in 1988 when he opened Deschutes Brewery in downtown Bend, Oregon. With a 50-barrel brew house, he set out to make the best beers possible. The brewery's very first beer, the Black Butte Porter, quickly gained popularity among locals and helped establish Deschutes Brewery as a top-notch beer maker.

Since its humble beginnings, Deschutes Brewery has grown significantly. It has increased its production capacity and distribution reach, making it one of the largest craft breweries in the country. Today, the brewery offers a wide range of beers throughout the year, including IPAs, stouts, porters, and ales.

Aside from its dedication to brewing great beer, Deschutes Brewery is also passionate about sustainability and supporting the community. The company has implemented various eco-friendly measures such as conserving water, using energy efficiently, and minimizing waste. This commitment reflects its desire to be more than just a brewery—it wants to make a positive impact on both the environment and society.
