Nestled along the banks of the John Day Wild and Scenic River in central Oregon lies the Priest Hole Recreation Site, a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a primitive camping experience. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), this remote area offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the region.

The Priest Hole Recreation Site is known for its primitive camping opportunities along the John Day River. Visitors can set up their tents and enjoy the tranquility of the area, with no designated campsites or amenities provided. [1][2] This type of dispersed camping allows campers to choose their own secluded spot, providing a more authentic and adventurous experience.

One of the key features of the Priest Hole area is its accessibility. While the site is not easily accessible for those with disabilities, it offers a free camping experience for all visitors. [3] This makes it an attractive option for those seeking a budget-friendly outdoor getaway.

However, it's important to note that the primitive nature of the Priest Hole Recreation Site means that there are no developed facilities, such as restrooms or running water. Campers must be prepared to pack in and pack out all their supplies and waste, practicing Leave No Trace principles to preserve the natural environment. [1][2]

The BLM is currently seeking public input on a proposal to make improvements to the Priest Hole Recreation Site, including the creation of designated campsites and the addition of amenities like picnic tables. [4][5] These proposed changes aim to enhance the visitor experience while still maintaining the site's primitive character.

For those seeking a remote and rustic camping adventure in central Oregon, the Priest Hole Recreation Site is a hidden gem worth exploring. With its stunning natural surroundings and opportunities for dispersed camping, it offers a unique and unforgettable outdoor experience. [6][7]
